Lesson 13: Networking is more than buzzwords
17 Lessons I learned at 17
In a world where the phrase “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” gets tossed around like free advice, networking has become a buzzword people love to throw into conversations. But let’s be real—networking isn’t just swapping business cards or sending out LinkedIn invites. It’s about building meaningful, reciprocal relationships that go beyond surface-level interactions.
I first understood this during my journey to start a hackathon. I reached out to several people for advice and support. Some didn’t respond, others politely declined, and a few gave me insights that completely shifted my perspective. What I realized, though, was that the value of networking isn’t just about getting something—it’s about creating genuine connections.
The people who helped me didn’t do it out of obligation; they saw my sincerity and wanted to help because of the bond we created.
Networking starts with authenticity. You don’t have to force conversations or pretend to be someone you’re not. Instead, focus on finding common ground. Build relationships because you value the person, not because you see them as a stepping stone. When you genuinely connect, the opportunities will naturally follow.
I’ve also learned that networking is a two-way street. For every piece of advice or help I received, I tried to give back in some way—whether by sharing what I learned or offering to help with something they needed. This reciprocity builds trust and turns fleeting interactions into lasting relationships.
How to Network Effectively
Be Genuine: Don’t try to impress; try to connect.
Give More Than You Take: Offer value before expecting anything in return.
Be Curious: Ask thoughtful questions and listen actively.
Follow Up: Relationships aren’t built in one meeting. Stay in touch, even if it’s just to check in.
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone: Attend events, message people, and take initiative.
One of my favorite quotes about networking is this:
“Your network is your net worth.” — Porter Gale
But here’s the twist: your “net worth” isn’t about money or opportunities. It’s about the relationships you cultivate, the wisdom you gain, and the impact you create through those connections.
