Lesson 11: Enjoy the moment
17 Lessons I learned at 17
In today’s world, we’re constantly chasing something—better grades, new experiences, future goals. It’s easy to get swept up in the cycle of “what’s next” and lose sight of what’s happening right in front of us. I’ve realized that sometimes, we’re so focused on getting somewhere that we forget to actually be present where we are.
I first understood this during one of those spontaneous moments with friends. We didn’t have any big plans or impressive agenda; we were just hanging out, laughing over something silly, and suddenly, I felt this overwhelming sense of contentment. I didn’t need to be anywhere else or do anything more. For the first time in a while, I was simply enjoying the now, with no expectation or pressure.
These moments, as small as they may seem, are what life is really about. It's those laughs that make you forget about everything else, the times you’re doing what you love without worrying about where it’s leading you, or the satisfaction of accomplishing a small goal just because you can. These instances are fleeting, and they’re what make the journey worthwhile.
As the saying goes, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” It’s true that we’re building a future, and planning is essential, but not at the expense of the here and now. Sometimes, it’s okay to set aside our big ambitions and immerse ourselves in the moment—enjoying the journey as much as the destination.
Looking back, I’ve come to understand that these moments of pure, unfiltered joy are what add depth and richness to life. They’re the small snapshots we hold onto, the ones that make all the hard work and the setbacks worth it. So, wherever you are, take a breath, pause, and remember to enjoy the moment. It may not last forever, but it’s these moments that make the story truly worth telling.
